Karen Dubrovsky is a Massachusetts-based printmaker pursuing her MFA in printmaking at MassArt (expected 2027). Her path to printmaking ran through architecture: she practiced for more than twenty years, including a decade as Principal at Prellwitz Chilinski Associates in Cambridge, leading large institutional projects. That training in structure, pattern, and material never left. It now lives in her prints and mixed-media work, which explores memory and domestic life through vintage textiles, embroidery, and women's labor. She earned her undergraduate degree in architecture from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her work received an honorable mention in the Northeast Fine Arts Exhibition at Workshop 13. She teaches printmaking workshops at art centers around Boston and is a member of the Cambridge Art Association and Concord Art Association.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My imagery draws from the visual language of mid-century domestic craft, needlework, and the grid of a weave. Through layering and shifts in scale, the image sits somewhere between representation and abstraction.
A stitch repeated becomes a pattern, and repetition is what drives the work, as both a formal tool and a lived condition. The domestic works the same way: the daily tasks of care like stitches are repeated until they become invisible. This labor is mundane and monotonous, but also vital, the mental load of carrying what others need, held quietly and largely unseen. In the studio I work the same way, printing, layering, shifting scale, until the decisions made in the process accumulate into something I cannot entirely predict. The image, like the day, is built one repeated gesture at a time.
